5 Ways to Start Living a Meaningful Life Right Now

My Journey

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”― Mark Twain

In my early 20’s , I was working in the oil & gas industry. I was young and eager to climb the corporate ladder. I was working close to a 60 hour work week. My ex-husband (then fiancée) was also working 70 -80 hours a week himself.

At the time, our oldest daughter was two years old. We were lucky in a sense that our next door neighbor was my ex’s cousin and she was able to take care of our daughter while we were working.

There came a point when I started to think and wonder why I am here? What is my purpose?

Here we had all this money but no time to spend it. No time to spend genuine family time with our daughter. Sure , she had the nicest clothes, latest and newest toys and when we were able to take a day off, we were able to buy her anything she wanted. But,  was that a good quality of life? Was that what I wanted for myself and my family?

After much contemplation, I brought up the idea of moving to his hometown ( across the country). Often he talked about the island’s way of life, his large family and all their extended family gatherings. I grew up with no extended family close by and was always a bit jealous of people who did have that.

I think I was drawn to the idea of being able to slow down and be surrounded by family. When I brought up the idea of moving to the ex, he was totally surprised but was quite supportive of moving across the country. A few months later, we packed up everything and moved to Prince Edward Island.

5 Ways to Start Living a Meaningful Life

Are you trying to figure out your purpose? You’re not alone. Today, I am sharing 5 ways to live a meaningful life right now:

Achieve Balance

Remember how I was working 60 hours a week? I would wake up, go to work, come home, make supper, put daughter to bed, work some more, go to bed. Rinse and repeat.

It’s important that there is a work/life balance. When we spend too much time at work or the other way around, neither is good. We need to have that balance between the two.

Follow your Passion

I had a friend tell me once that my eyes light up when I start talking about how I can help people with their business. He said, “Rosie, THIS is your passion.  The idea of helping people, sharing your knowledge about business, and creating change, this is you. YOU need to continue doing this”.

You know what? He was right!

If you’re not sure what your passion is, start asking yourself questions. What are you good at? What gets you invigorated? If money was not an issue, what would you be doing?

Make a Difference

Each one of us has skills and talents but there is no greater feeling than sharing that knowledge with someone else.

I have facilitated scrapbooking classes, honestly, that was a lot of fun! I’ve given social media workshops to the business community. And as of last year, I am one of the Board of Directors for our Boys & Girls Club. Most recently, I’ll be sitting on one of our City’s standing committees.

Live in the Moment

It’s our culture to be on the move, especially in this digital world. You’d think that with all this technology that we would have more free time. Instead, we are hooked on it.

Take time throughout your day, to stop, take it all in and enjoy the moment. If we’re not careful, we can miss out on a lot. That’s how I felt with working all the time. My daughter was at a crucial age where she was changing all the time. If I continued to work like that, I would miss all those moments.

Set Goals and Take Action

Are you like me? I have in my mind what my goal is but I don’t take the time to write them down. I start out really good and then slowly start petering off.

There lots of benefits to setting goals. What is even better, is to write them down and put some action items and reasonable time limits on it. How will you ever know how far you’ve come or how far you have to go if not written down?

NOTE: Living a meaning life is a choice. Repeat. Living a meaning life, with purpose, is a choice. Once you make this choice, then it’s time to follow through and take action.

These are great points and I love your story. You are so correct there needs to be balance, it’s so easy to get caught up in a schedule and just keep doing it without wondering if it really is the best thing for you or your family.

Kudos to you for being brave enough to step off the merry go round, to figure out what you wanted and go for it!

  2. I really love this post and your positive attitude. It must have been a hard decision and most probably was a big adjustment but I agree with you- what’s the point of all the money if you can’t enjoy it with those dearest to you.
