Last month,   I introduced a new series to Everything’s Coming Up Rosie called “3 Things to Try This Month. At the beginning of each month, I post three inspiring ideas and activities to put on your monthly bucket list. This October, I will be posting three more – one for personal development, one for business development and one challenge is just for fun!

Personal Development – Start a Gratitude Journal

It’s October and in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of the month. It’s a time to be thankful for what we have and what better way to do that than starting a gratitude journal!

During difficult times, I know that it can be a challenge to remember to give thanks. But in order for new things to come into our life, we need to learn to appreciate the things that we have already. By writing down 3-5 things that you’re grateful for each day, soon it will become a habit. So, when you do have those not -so-great days, you have a record to look back on and relive those positive moments in your life.

Gratitude journals can be as simple as using paper and pen (like me) or there are now apps that you can download to keep track of your daily blessings.

For example,  the Gratitude Journal app, as seen in the Huffington Post, Oprah and the Telegraph – this app is the easiest and most effective way to rewire your brain in just five minutes a day. Sorry, Android users, it’s only available to IPhone users at this time!

Business Development – Reach Out To Someone That Inspires You

Have you met someone either in real life or online and you admire their confidence or drive? Or perhaps it was their ability to keep their feelings from clouding their decision making?

I’ve been blessed to have both formal and informal mentors throughout my career. Often, what helps me get to the next level is asking for help or advice from them. I’ve also been a mentor, for a short time, to an entrepreneur.  I was asked by my local Chamber of Commerce to be a mentor due to my social media/ marketing skills.

This month, I am encouraging you to reach out to someone that you admire and ask for advice. Perhaps it’s to hash out an idea that you might have or ask about balancing home/work, whatever it is, I can honestly say that it is a win-win situation. Most are honoured that they are asked for their opinion and you feel much better about your decision and the direction you need to take.

Just For Fun – Do a Random Act of Kindness

Here in Canada, we have the coffee franchise called Tim Hortons. You might have one where you live or a coffee place that is similar in your city. Quite often during the holidays, I will pull up to the drive-thru window and the person ahead of me has paid for my coffee. It’s always a lovely surprise, in which I then pass it on to the person behind me and pay for their order.

In line with the gratitude theme, I thought that I would encourage my readers to do one random act of kindness this month.  According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website: “The ripple effect starts with one: One person to hold open a door; one person to leave a note on someone’s car complimenting their awesome parking skills; one person to write a thank-you letter to a teacher. One person to be a spark of kindness when another really needs it.”

  1. I love all of these suggestions! I’ve been meaning to create a gratitude journal, but have failed at doing so. I do have Thank You Notes.. does that count?
    That doesn’t matter, because I WILL make a gratitude journal. I have a thousand notebooks, I should use them, eh…
    Random acts of kindness are my specialty. 🙂
